AI and AR are here to help.
This morning I came across an article from AI News, discussing SnapChat’s use of AI to revitalize their position as one of the leading Augmented Reality (AR) technologies in the market. While Snapchat’s AR and AI meld may seem “basic’ to some, the fusion of these two technologies is a long time coming, will be more broadly practical, and even essential in years to come.
In 1977 (A long time ago…) Luke Skywalker was deep in the “meridian trench” when he turned off his AR weapons system… Can’t blame him, his Heads-Up Display (HUD) was rather crude. Although first used in the 1940’s, it was not until the late 70s and early 80s that jets like the F16 and F18 were designed with HUDs to help pilots manage the massive amount of information coming their way.
It would be a decade later until HUDs were introduced to commercial aviation and if you have been walking auto showrooms lately, you know that HUDs and AR are almost “standard” in many of today’s road vehicles. While I won’t be letting go of the wheel while driving on I-85 any time soon, it is truly fascinating seeing AR at work with AI while negotiating slower drives in urban settings.
In February, Intuitive Machines landed on the moon, and as we speak, a Chinese spacecraft is making its way back to Earth after a “research” mission on the dark side of the moon. Traffic to and from the moon is going to increase substantially, and while space is vast; there are not traffic lanes to see, and thanks to nature, most routes will force proximity and operation through the same Lagrange earth-moon chokepoint. “EM1” will be a busy and difficult intersection to negotiate without clear understanding of all nearby objects in transit, and help to those piloting the spacecrafts.
From creating or consuming content via our smartphones, to vehicles operating in places where there is no up or down like space, the combination of AR and AI is as powerful as we’d like to believe “The Force” could be. The only difference is that AR+AI is real.
Think that AR+AI is only for vehicles, military or transportation applications? What about…
ER assistance for trauma patient treatment?
Cook/Sous-chef assistance and training? (bet Gordon would hate it)
SCUBA diving real-time biometric information and safety recommendations to divers
Customized holiday clothing shopping recommendations
Today we see it in a few applications, and the pairing seems to be a game. Expect that the AI + AR social engineering we see today in Snapchat, your Tesla, drone or local retail store will be mainstream all around us within the next ten years or less.
Wish we’d had this when I was on submarine patrol onboard Jackson.
